Sevilla finally agree to sell Steven Nzonzi, £36M sees deal done

Sevilla are open to selling World Cup winning midfielder, Steven N’Zonzi if any interested club meet his release clause, according to reports from The Mirror.

The 29-year-old is wanted by Unai Emery, who hopes he might add  more solidity in the central midfield area. The one snag though is that his release clause is set at £36m, a fee Arsenal are reluctant to meet.

That seems understandable, given that we’ve already added to our midfield with the signings of Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira, leaving other areas in need of strengthening.

Despite this, Emery still wants another player to add raw physical power in midfield and had identified N’Zonzi as that man. The two men worked during the coach’s spell in charge of Sevilla, with N’Zonzi making 47 appearances in their solitary season together and capping if off with a Europa League triumph in 2016.

While the manager wants N’Zonzi, the Arsenal board are not too sold on the idea given that the club has enough midfielders, his age and also because of the fee involved. For Arsenal to pursue a move for N’Zonzi, it would mean that some players might have to be sold to free up cash.

Under the tutelage of Emery, N’Zonzi quickly became one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe, and the player himself has credited the Spanish tactician for developing his game. It is yet unclear if the move will materialize, but the fact that Sevilla are ready to sell him mean that there is still possibility of him joining Arsenal.

He also has Premier League experience having played for the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City. N’Zonzi is a defensive midfielder that is known for his physicality, awareness and languid nature, reminiscent of Gunners legend, Patrick Vieira.
