Arsenal’s kids will get another chance to prove their worth when they take on Sheffield United in the Carling Cup later tonight.
Manager Arsene Wenger revealed the squad for the match, naming Gilberto Silva in the starting team despite the recent suggestions that the Brazilian captain had had a falling out with the Frenchman over a recent lack of opportunities. The manager candidly refuted the claims made against Gilberto, questioning the credibility of the reporting and praising the professionalism of one of his most senior players.
“I deny that categorically, and I find this assessment disrespectful to a great professional like Gilberto. He is 100 per cent professional and is in the squad for tomorrow. He will play.”
It’s a shame that Wenger has had to make a statement defending Gilberto’s professionalism because of all the members in the squad I think he’s probably the last who act disrespectfully towards the manager. As Wenger mentioned, he is a model professional and there is just no way he would ever behave in the manner that was suggested even if he was unhappy with the current situation. If the stories were about Jens Lehmann then I could probably understand but as soon as Gilberto was mentioned I just rolled my eyes. Hopefully it will make a few people think twice about swallowing everything the British tabloids say, but I guess that’s probably too much to ask.
No-one quite like Bendtner
Moving onto the Sheffield game, I’m fairly confident that Gilberto will start at central defence because the squad looks pretty thin in that area. For some reason Armand Traore has been left out of the squad and as far as I know aside from Lassana Diarra, there are no other options at left-back. Although I don’t normally like to attempt naming starting sides (and Carling Cup teams are usually the hardest to pick), if I had to choose a team I’d hazard at the following lineup:
GK: Fabianski; RB: Hoyte; CB:Â Song; CB:Â Gilberto;Â LB:Â Diarra; RM: Walcott; CM:Â Denilson; CM:Â Diaby; LM: Gibbs; CF:Â Eduardo; CF:Â Bendtner.Â
Obviously there are other options; Theo Walcott could start up front, Diarra might play in the middle of the pitch and Fran Merida might even feature. Who really knows? One player who, in my eyes, is certain to start is Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner and Wenger spoke a little bit about his performances for the club so far this season.
“When he has come on he has had an impact every time. That is because he is intelligent and he is quick as well with a good technique so he has all the ingredients that the team needs.”
As the manager said, every time he has come off the bench he has made a difference and that has mostly been due to his ability to intimidate opponents with his massive frame. Since Wenger took over the club I don’t think Arsenal have had a player quite like Bendtner and for that reason I think he’s such a valuable asset. He’s probably still hurting after his awful miss against Liverpool so hopefully he can grab a goal against Sheffield United to get things back on track.
That’s about all for today. I’m not going to be able to watch the Carling Cup match so if anyone does get to see it, please let myself and the other readers of the blog who might have to miss out what you think. Cheers!
What do you think?
Have your say on Arsenal’s match with Sheffield United by leaving a comment.
Armand Traore is on an international duty.
i think its gonna be:
Fabianski
j.hoyte/Gilberto/Song/Gibbs
Wallcot/Diarra/Denilson/Diaby
Eduardo/bendtner
subs:
merida(diaby)
lansbury(diarra)
g.hoyte(j.hoyte)
I think that Gilberto can be neutralizing mental of the young gunners. That is good choice from Arsene Wenger.
Lineups as I see
GK: Fabianski
RB: Diarra
LB: Hoyte
CB: Song & Gilberto
RM: Walcott
LM: Merida
CM: Denilson & Diaby
ST: Eduardo + Bendtner
Fabianski
J.Hoyte…Gilberto…Song…Gibbs
Diarra
Denilson……..Diaby…….Merida
Eduardo
Bendtner
Subs : Mannone,Walcott,G.Hoyte,Barazite,Lansbury
Walcott should be used only when we can’t break down opponent’s defense. Walcott should be saved for the big match on Saturday. If we are leading at least 2 goals, It is good to give Barazite & Lansbury some time on the pitch.
My prediction 1-3 to Young Guns. This would give “senior” a good boost for the Saturday game. Go go Gooner…
i think there is no way Diarra will play in defense,i think the starting eleven will be as follows
GK:Fabianski
RB:G.Hoyte
LB:J.Hoyte
CB:Gilberto,Song
RM:Diaby
LM:Gibbs
CM:Denii,Diarra
ST:Bendtner,Eduardo
Barazite for Diaby and other changes later on
Hello Gunners! Want to watch Arsenal Play live Against Sheffield United! Come by to my site! http://www.ArsenalTV.net.ms hurry game starts soon! Its FREE cuz we’re ARSENAL!!!
a 3-0 win, Eduardo nets 2 which id good for both club and himself and Denilson gets his second goal of the carling. 2 rounds,2 goals. Also 2 games, 2 clean sheets for Fabianski!
It sounded like a pretty comprehensive performance. Eduardo’s finishes were apparently very, very sharp. Sounded like Fabianski was a little bit messy though…
I want to see Eduardo play on Sat. I really believe he will shine in crucial matches such as the one coming up. Arsene should give him THAT chance!!! He should play with Ade vs. MANU, and that’s a must!!!!!
wont happen…..hell play Ade with Hleb in behind…..same formation as he played against liverpool
the young lads played well and i was particularly impressed by Diarra in the midfield. he held the ball comfortably and those dribbling skills were great too.Song Billong was quite active and confident but i really think his size won’t allow him to blossom into a Central Back to be counted on.i prefer him playing as a defensive midfielder.
Bentdner played quite well too and he’ll be a force to reckon with soon so Ade should brush up his finishing and get lots of goals, otherwise stiff competition will come up so soon.
SF, any news on Saturdays game so far?
knightman – Yep, today’s post is up and it’s got a pretty detailed analysis of the weekend game against United. I’m starting to get very, very excited.
I want Eduardo 2 start against Man Utd cuz his finishing was great last night and Ades hasn’t been for a while so we need 2 strikers upfront on Saturday, bring on Walcott around 60 mins 2 scare their tired defence. Kieran Gibbs impressed me last night and we are in the 1/4 final lads!!
sometin magic…go the youth team..
