He was signed by manager, Arsene Wenger as the first signing of this month’s transfer window to be the long-term replacement for club captain, Per Mertesacker, who is retiring from professional football at the end of this season.

Before joining Arsenal, he was courted by a number of  top European clubs as he is one of the brightest young players in the whole of Europe as a player destined for the very top of the game if he reaches the ability his potential is showing.

He was initially expected to go out on loan to gain first team experience but a culmination of injuries to a number of Arsenal’s central defenders means he has been kept at the club to add cover for the position. He is still to make his debut since signing for £2m at the beginning of the month, but has featured for the club’s U23s.

The 6ft 4in defender played for Arsenal 23s against their Manchester United counterparts on Monday, playing the entire duration of the game. He was excellent in what was his first game on English shores, winning every battle in the air and displaying calmness and composure on the ball that belied his tender years.

It is hoped that the player, who made 16 appearances for Olympiakos will be a presence in the heart of the defence for many more years to come.
