How will the new Premier League TV rights deal affect Arsenal?

Premier League clubs will share a massive £5.1 billion between them over the course of the next three years due to the domestic television rights that were sold to Sky Sports and BT Sport in February 2015.

The impact is already being seen around Europe as Premier League clubs are arguably paying over-the-price for some players to bring them to England.

We splashed out £34 million to sign Granit Xhaka from Borussia Mönchengladbach, in excess of £35 million for Shkodran Mustafi, and £17.1 million for Lukas Perez– would they have really charged that fee before the TV rights deal was signed?

Bayern Munich only paid £32 million to rivals Borussia Dortmund for the highly-rated Mario Götze, or “German Messi”, as some were calling him at the time, back in 2013.  This summer they’ve sold him back for a mere £18 million.

At the end of the day, Arsenal and the other 19 Premier League clubs still have a lot of cash in their wallets to throw around despite the huge funds spent on new signings.

Bournemouth are an excellent example of this.  Now in their second top flight season and with a stadium capacity of only 11,500 – the Cherries have already splashed out £39 million on signings this summer, including £15 million on Jordon Ibe, £6 million for Brad Smith and £10 million to Championship side Leeds United for Lewis Cook.

The teams expected to compete for the Premier League title were busier in the market – Manchester City have brought in John Stones (£47.5m), Leroy Sané (£37m), Gabriel Jesus (£27m), İlkay Gündoğan (£21m) and Nolito (£13.8m).

The new Premier League TV deal gives us a great opportunity to upgrade our squad and become title challengers once again.

Paddy Power sports betting have produced a guide to UK TV football history below which shows all the key deals over the years, including Sky Sports and Arsenal TV.

You won’t be surprised that Arsenal haven’t made it into the British record transfers during Wenger’s reign…
