Calling all Australian Arsenal supporters

Posted on Posted in Archives

No news to speak of today so I thought I’d set you, the regular readers of the Arsenal FC Blog with a little homework task.

For those that aren’t aware – and I’m sure there are quite a few of you – despite being an Arsenal supporter I am a born and bred Australian who resides in Brisbane. See for yourself. The reason for telling you this is that I am very interested in promoting the community of Arsenal supporters in Australia through this very blog.

There are a undoubtedly a lot of great Arsenal blogs on the internet – Arseblog, Gunnerblog, Goodplaya, The Cannon, A Cultured Left Foot to name just a few – but to my knowledge the Arsenal FC Blog is the only blog from Australia that is consistently updated and has a reasonable readership.

Taking this into account I see quite a good opportunity to use this blog to promote the Arsenal community in Australia. For those that aren’t aware, there is an official Arsenal Australia community that does a similar thing, but this is still in it’s relevant infancy and their website does not have the facility to comment on daily news and opinions the way this blog provides.

Essentially my idea is to get Arsenal supporters in Australia communicating between themselves and with me to such an extent that I can facilitate events on Arsenal game nights at various pubs around the country. This would allow die-hard supporters to get together and share a beer and a cheer at Arsenal pubs late into the night (when games are played here) as well as providing venues for English travellers to follow Arsenal while they are away from home.

Arseblogger does this quite successfully with supporters from Ireland and although I don’t pretend to have the same readership and influence as he does I still feel the potential is there to build something special within the Arsenal community down under.

However, before I pursue this idea further I wanted to get some feedback from any readers of the blog who live in Australia. Basically I’d first like to know how many of you there are, where you’re from and whether you would be open to the idea of promoting some sort of Arsenal communities at various pubs around the country.

If you’re an Australian reader I’d urge you to leave a comment from this post and let me know what you think. If you’re from England or anywhere else in the world and you’re planning on travelling down under at some time in the future I’d also encourage you to let me know what you think.

While I’m at it would also be great to hear from any other regular readers of the blog around the world. Let me know where you’re all from so that we can all get to know a little bit more about each other. I know it all sounds a bit warm and fuzzy but at the end of the day I feel it could well be a good idea.

Cheers in advance.

Let me know where you’re from and what you think of the idea by leaving a comment.

  4. Love the idea MAD ARSENAL FAN I live in BRISBANE and play soccer here and would be awesome if more ARSENAL fans could get on this.

  5. Arsenal Australia have a forum on their site. Within this forum, there are sections for each state. Most states are meeting up and discuss this on the forum.

  6. @ Melbourne Gooner – Cheers. I’ve previously contacted Arsenal Australia to try and link up and have had some problem with the membership situation. I very much want to go through both the forums and here to create as big a following as possible.

  7. Panda Bear likes Spanish Fry’s idea for Arsenal fans in Democratic Australia to enjoy the wonders of Arsenal in a good environment like Panda Bear in his Bamboo Enclosure with other friends. If Panda Bear travels to Australia he will be sure to stand side by side Arsenal brothers in the Inferior creature and strange unstrument Bar. That is all.

  8. im in sydney and would like the option of getting together for matches in a local pub with fellow fans

  9. Sydney here. Top blog Spanish Fry came across it through some random links a while back and it soon came into my regular Arsenal blog list :p

It is nice to hear about the team through an Australian perspective, regardless if its a different or relatively same opinion on various matters. Top work mate.

  10. I live in sydney and would love to see the australian arsenal community getting together to watch EPL games throughout the season

  11. Such a great idea. I was not looking forward to the prospect of moving to Australia and not being able to watch the games with other fans. I’m moving to the south east coast in Victoria. If you can keep me updated on where to watch the matches that would be wicked! Cheers

  12. Im a student in adelaide and I LOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEE ARSENAL

  15. It’s a great idea Spanish Fry. I regularly read this blog as I appreciate the fair, well thought-out opinions that you express. I comment on here occasionally also and would love to be able to watch some games with fellow Gooners around Brisbane. Oh… I live in Brisbane too. :-p

  16. Hey everyone i live in Sydney and would love to see this plan go ahead.

  17. massive arsenal fan from Bondi ydney happy to hear and watch games with felSlow gooners

  18. Proudly an arsenal supporter in newcastle adrift in a sea of man utd and chelsea fans here!

id love to watch an arsenal game with other fans, having NEVER HAD THE CHANCE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!

  19. Great idea. Have followed The Gunners for 40 years and would love a regular Sydney pub venue to visit with the rest of the “clan” to cheer the lads on.

  20. I’m from england but been over here 8 years now and living in canberra just left brissy wish this had happened earlier but I’m up for it used to work at belco soccer club and got some friends there that will put on the games if we have a strong crowd as I’m sick to death of all these plastic manure and chelscum fans. LET’S DO THIS FOR THE LOVE OF ARSNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  21. oH, MY GOD, such suprised that we r going to gathering together and be the real fans watching game!!!!

  22. I am emigrating to sydney at the beginning of june and am A die hard arsenal fan. Would love to meet some gooners that I could watch the games with.

  23. hey guys who ever love Arsenal can add my MSN which is lx8789@hotmail
we can really go hang out having Arsenal football pure fun in the next season.
i am a international students, from china, been Aus for nearly 2 years.

  24. I am an Aussie living in London. Actually about a hundred metres from the Gunners Stadium. I am a mad gunners fan and have been to most of the games this year. I am moving back in November to Melbourne and the thing I will miss the most is going to watch the Gunners live. Even just live on TV. So I am very interested in getting toghther and watching games with fellow Gooners. I also plan on spreading the word.

  25. thats all just been fantastic
i think we definite goona stick on together when the Arsenal games in on board cheers in advance!

  26. I’d be happy to help organise events with fellow gooners in melbourne!

  27. hey Spanish Fry, sounds good. ill be blogging on here!

my favourite blog is*, so ill be on both!

  28. plenty of arsenal fans here is sydney. me included. i didn’t miss an arsenal game all season, live ones that is!

  29. Ah forgot to say: Londoner born and bred, and I live within a stone’s throw of the stadium. Arsenal fan for 26 years now (I’m 42).

  30. Massive arsenal fan from the sunshine coast!!! Just got back from London a couple of months ago, I am a member at Emirates and was lucky enough to see the Blackburn and Ac Milan games, supported them since I was born. Go the gunners!!!!

  31. i’m an indonesian but soon to be working in melbourne starting next august. well, i’ll be there only for half a year but please do tell me if you’re arranging something about Arsenal… victoria concordia crescit…

  32. I live in North London but I’d just like to say that I think what you’re doing is fantastic Spanish. Building up a community and watching games together is the best thing a blog can accomplish. Bringing people together in a group with a common binary ingredient – a love for the Arsenal. I hope your efforts are a success.

  33. Good luck with your idea SF. I’m a gunners fan in the United States up in the Seattle area. I just recently spied an English Pub in the area where I went for the Champions League final but I still haven’t found one that plays live EPL games. Pubs in the States don’t seem to keen on opening up at nine o’clock in the morning. Must be Spud fans.

  34. G’day, g’day

I’m Singaporean by birth, but I currently live in Melbourne and am now a citizen. I’ve been supporting Arsenal for as long as I care to remember. I love this idea of a network within Australia! It seems football is not given enough attention as AFL (uggh), Rugby (it’s all right), and Cricket (nuff said).

  35. My name is Fernando Guilherme.I have supported Arsenal for well over 40 years but have only seen the gunners play 4 live games. How i enjoyed the euro final althought we were beaten by the spanish.By the way i live in Johannesburg,South Africa

  36. I am a life long fan – moved from UK back to to Aus in 93 – am an Aussie- live in Melbourne-My family are ALL Arse fans all over the world- including Uncle and cousins in Brisbane. Have not missed a game in years. Great idea. Would hook up in Bris or Melb.

  37. Yeah why not, can’t hurt to go out for some coldies and bitch about Eboue with someone who understands. 😉

  38. You’ve broken my heart enough times not being around when Im at the P&W, Spanish Fry ;). Nice dig at my not updating, but eh. I can have no complaints, heh.

Im all for getting an Arsenal ‘fraternity’ going down under. Im getting tired of having to go with Liverpool fans to enjoy atmosphere while the odd sprinkling (read: one or two, including myself) Arsenal fans quietly sit and drink coke.

  39. Thanks for your responses everyone. I absolutely appreciate it. I will be in contact with Arsenal Australia to get something sorted out before the start of next season.

@ Jammathon – No offence meant at all – I promise you. And I’ve probably been there at the same time as you and not known it, as you say there is generally only a sprinkling of Arsenal supporters compared with the Liverpool/Man United fans at the Brisbane Pig ‘n’ Whistle.

    To the future.

  40. A very good idea! Gold Coast would be an ideal place for all Gooner fans to catch up on game night.

  41. If you were at the Arsenal/Chelsea game in December, or the second leg of the Champs League against ‘Pool, Im the one who rants and raves hysterically. I danced on my own up front when Gallas scored against Chelsea. On my own! The shame of it all.

  42. I know jammathon what you mean as I was yelling at the tv in canberra casino when dudu got his leg broke and got told to calm down as I was putting everyone off their game of blackjack.

  43. @ Jammathon – I think I saw you at the Pig man. Were you there on the Sunday night when Arsenal lost 2-1 to Manchester United. There was one berk there who sang all the songs for Arsenal against about a thousand Manchester supporters. Ultimate respect if it was you haha.

  44. SO AWESOME TO SEE SO MANY OF MY FELLOW ARSENAL BROTHERS I ALWAYS KNEW THERE WERE SO MANY ARSENAL FANS its gr8 to see, how FUCKEN AWESOME would it be to catch up and see a game with ppl that understand the meaning of BEAITIFUL FOOTBALL.
If U live in BRISBANE HOLLER should all catch up when the GOONERS PLAY.

  45. i’m from malaysia, currently studying in melbourne. and seriously, i’m a huge huge huge fan of arsenal. watched their game since i was as little as 10 (and back then, epl wasn’t even famous in asia !). they were the first team i watched on tv, and fell in love immediately with their football. 3 years without a trophy would still not stop me from supporting arsenal. i like the idea of mad arsenal fans getting together and watch how we turn on the style, how football should really be played. watching arsenal play in a champions league final would be great 🙂

it’s great to here there are many arsenal fans here in australia and i think it’s a great idea what u’re suggesting here. good on ya mate !

  46. hi mate theres a few of us down on the coast and we had a meet up at the Pig N Whistle with a few of the Brisbane/Sunshine coast crew.. in the process of arranging another meet early this year..

saw your post on the aus supporters forum, anyway just letting you know theres a few of us around..

  47. Never realised there was so many Gooners in Australia. Moved to the Sunshine Coast from Islington 2 years ago leaving behind Highbury and my season ticket – East Stand upper at Highbury.

  48. I’m from melbourne. I want to see arsenal matches in pub with fellow gooners. Any gooner from melbourne can call me at 0433004920

  49. Niranjan – the Melbourne gooners meet at the Celtic Club in Melbourne for the games! Corner of Queen street and La Trobe Streets. cheers

  50. hey malaysian…coming to study in brisbane in feb….i would love to watch the game there with other fans with a nice cold beer

  51. In brisbane too – ex-season ticket from 96 – 05 (east stand lower, block G, row 22, seat 16)…why are ESPN and SBS both showing manure !!!! at least give us a red button…

  52. I am going to be in Aus (sydney) from April until June. Obviously gonna be some big games in these months – where can i meet up with fellow gooners? I guess its hard to watch the 3pm games with the time difference but the 12.00pm k.o and possibly the 20.00pm k.o’s shold be ok?

If we get to the champs league final in may then we have to organise something huge!

please get back to me if you can help

  53. A real help would be if someone posted the times and sports channel that games are on.I have all the sports channels but never know when and where to view the games seems hit and miss sometimes especially as i work shifts. would kill for a reliable listing. Thanks Rich

  54. Howzit Gooners,
Just moved to brissey.I live on the south side (clocked end). Looking to hook up with some hardcore gooners to watch a few games and have a beer or 10. Let me know if anyone is keen?
