Arsene Wenger has quality to revert back to four at the back

During the defeat to Manchester United, Arsene Wenger reverted back to a four man defence line after Shkodran Mustafi was substituted for Alex Iwobi. This makes the formation change back to a four man defence contrary to the three centre backs that have now been adopted since late last season.

Immediately after the substitution was made, the amount of possession gained by Arsenal was tremendous. However, the early errors in the game was too late to redeem as the game ended 1-3 in favor of United.

Going forward, in subsequent matches, like the game against Southampton, Arsenal can start adopting the usual 4-3-3 formation. Betting at Betfair, Arsenal have been tipped to win the game with great odds which we must take due advantage of.

That could have a better chance of happening when the new formation is used. The effect was seen in the Europa league game when Arsenal ran riot over BATE Borisov as the game ended 6-0. What the formation gives Arsenal is an extra man in attack compared to the 3-5-2 previously used.

Nothing is guaranteed in football as every formation has its pros and cons. The three at the back gives room for solidity at the opportunity of a ball playing centre back. It also gives the wing back to go the full length of the pitch.

This sometimes might have its consequences as it’s very demanding and tiring. It needs workhorse to maximize the potential of a 3-5-2 and as the season progresses, the effect will be seen on players as they become more tired. Chelsea towards the end of last season is a very good case study.

The decision to revert back to a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 will give room for a players like Theo Walcott to get more playing time. Alex Iwobi, Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud gets to have a fair chance at the starting eleven compared to the present formation which suits only few players at the club presently.

Arsene Wenger has his work well cut out for him and like always, he will have to make the best decision that suits the players that he has available at his disposal. The fact that all Arsenal players are available now, barring Santi Carzola who was not registered in the team in the first half of the season, everyone deserve to fight for a place in the team.

Technically, playing a natural four man defence gives Arsenal a better chance against the less weight teams as more attacking options will be started. The quality of the current Arsenal squad shows that there is no reason why Wenger cannot go with either formation instead of always being very predictable like what happened against United.

The league still has a long way to go and if there is still a chance to challenge for the title, it’s better the club go for it. The only way to go for it is to be able to play in different ways as to surprise opponent in the league.

More attacking players means more goals and more goals means more wins and more wins means better finish on the table.
